Jianying Skill: Diagnose Missing Media in Drafts
Check that the media exists, then check how the draft references it
If Jianying Editor Skill creates a draft but Jianying reports missing media when you open it, preserve the original draft and source files first. Check whether the affected files still exist, then compare the paths and local material IDs recorded in the draft. Use those findings to investigate macOS compatibility or version differences.
This article is based on public sources checked on October 10, 2026. No hands-on Jianying testing was performed for this article. Issue 22 records a media error on Mac with Jianying 11.2.0. It is one reported case and does not establish how often the problem occurs.
Use the error message to narrow the search
Save the full error text first. If you inspect draft files, work read-only on a copy and examine only readable JSON, such as draft_info.json. If a file is missing or unreadable, record that limitation; there is no need to rewrite or decrypt it. The checks below are drawn from the upstream project and do not cover every possible cause.
| What you see | Fields or files to check | Primary evidence | What to do next, and what remains uncertain |
|---|---|---|---|
| The media file exists, but Jianying reports it as missing | Does the material's path point to the actual file? Is local_material_id empty? | PR 23 describes an identification problem and changes the code to generate nonempty IDs from filenames | Check whether your installed Skill commit includes the change. A nonempty ID alone does not establish that the whole draft is valid |
| The problem starts after media is moved or temporary files are cleared | Does path point outside the draft folder? Is there an actual copy of the media inside the draft? | The PR 23 changes add a process that copies media into materials/ | Preserve any remaining source files and check whether copying succeeded. The merged code still has a fallback that uses the original path if copying fails |
| Cloud music cannot be found | Check the actual file at the audio path and any download errors. Is there only a name such as cloud_music_…mp3? | The PR 23 changes remove placeholder paths for nonexistent files and stop adding the music when its download fails | Establish whether the download succeeded. A filename does not prove that the audio was downloaded |
| macOS reports an access or unsupported-format error | Save the full error, source path, any known format or codec details, and the draft-generation log | PR 20 separately addresses draft-folder detection, media parsing, and format compatibility | Report access, parsing, and format symptoms separately. Using a Mac does not, by itself, identify the cause |
Pay particular attention to copy-failure messages. In the merged code, the default destination is materials/ inside the draft, but a failure can leave the draft referencing the original file. Check the affected material's actual path rather than relying on the folder's existence.
Check your installed version even if a fix has been merged
PR 23 and PR 20 were both merged into main on September 11, 2026. A merge does not establish that your installed version contains those changes. The author of PR 23 reported successful verification with five local videos. That is an upstream test report, not a test performed for this article, and it does not establish that every existing draft can be recovered.
Issue 26 asks whether drafts made for newer versions can be exported using Jianying 5.9. No answer was visible when the issue was checked. Do not treat downgrading as a confirmed solution. Record whether media opens correctly and whether export succeeds as separate outcomes.
Include comparable details in your issue report
Copy the fields below. Enter “unknown” where needed and retain the steps that failed. If you later reproduce the problem, use a copy of the draft and test media that is safe to share publicly.
- Operating system and version:
- Full Jianying version:
- Skill version or commit; if unknown, installation source and date:
- Full error text; whether it occurred during generation, opening, preview, or export:
- How the draft was generated and how it was opened:
- Affected media types; whether the actual files still exist:
- Whether files were moved or temporary files were cleared; whether music came from local files or the cloud:
- path and local_material_id, if readable; whether a media copy was created inside the draft:
- Steps already tried, the result of each step, and the expected result:
Before posting, redact account details, private directory names, and client names. You can represent a path as “user folder / test project / media A.mp4,” while retaining whether it is inside the draft, outside it, or in temporary storage. Do not attach private media or the complete original draft.
