ChatGPT Attachments Missing from Project Sources After Moving a Chat?

If attachments are missing from Sources after you move a chat into a project, locate the correct originals, check for duplicates, and add the needed material through the project’s sources area. Then open each item and verify its contents. A moved chat or a visible filename is not enough to confirm success.

Separate chat attachments, Library, and Project Sources

Check three things independently: can you find the attachment in its original chat, is the needed file in Library, and does the target project’s Sources list contain the correct version? Evidence of one does not establish the other two.

OpenAI says a moved chat inherits the project’s instructions and file context. That description does not promise that every earlier attachment automatically becomes a project source. Reference material can be added directly to the project. OpenAI: Projects in ChatGPT

Library’s “Add from library” attaches a saved file to a chat. Do not treat that action as confirmation that the file became a Project source. OpenAI: Using Library

Community users have reported PNGs missing from Sources after a chat move and mismatches between Library folders and projects. These are reports about particular situations, not proof of a bug affecting every account or an official promise of automatic synchronization. Report one, report two

The following is a manual verification workflow based on documented entry points, not a test performed in a private account.

1. Find the correct original, then check Sources for duplicates

List the material the project actually needs. You do not need every draft from the conversation. For each item, note its filename, version date, and one recognizable detail, such as a section heading or an image annotation.

Start with your own authoritative copy. If the only copy is in ChatGPT, look in the original chat or Library. Library supports searching and downloading saved files; files uploaded in Temporary Chat are not saved there. OpenAI: Using Library

Open the candidate and check its contents before looking for the same material in the target project’s Sources:

  • Correct version already present: proceed to verification without uploading again
  • Matching name, uncertain version: compare contents first
  • Material genuinely missing: add it to the project

For example, if you need an approved event schedule, do not also treat an early draft from the conversation as current. This is a selection and deduplication method, not a promise that the product identifies authoritative versions for you.

2. Add the material through the project’s sources area

Open the intended Project and use its add-source or add-file entry point to select the checked original. Do not stop after attaching a file in the chat composer. If your interface does not offer a way to add an existing Library file directly to Sources, download the needed copy and upload it through the project’s sources area.

OpenAI supports adding documents or images directly to projects and opening added files from the sources list. A same-name upload may offer “Upload anyway” or “Skip.” Stop and compare before accepting a duplicate. OpenAI: Projects in ChatGPT

For a shared project, confirm that its members may access the material before adding it. A display problem is not a reason to expose a document to the wrong audience.

3. Open the file and verify its contents

Return to Sources and open each item you handled. Use this checklist:

  • I am in the intended Project
  • The needed item is in Sources, without extra copies created by repeated retries
  • It opens as the expected document or image, rather than an older same-name draft
  • I can verify one important detail, or the expected image, annotation, or text
  • After leaving and returning to the sources area, I can still find and open it

Only then mark the item “added and content checked.” A filename that appears but cannot be opened remains incomplete.

Optionally, start a new chat inside the project, name the file, and ask a question with a verifiable answer. Ask it to identify the passage used and say when it cannot find the material. This is an additional usage check: one correct answer does not guarantee retrieval on every future turn, and one failed answer does not prove that the file disappeared.

4. Still failing? Record the steps before contacting support

Avoid repeatedly moving the same conversation out and back in, or immediately deleting older files. Record the failing stage: locating the original, uploading it, finding it in the list, or opening the listed item.

Prepare a record without confidential contents:

  • Date, time, and time zone
  • File type and size, such as PNG, PDF, or TXT
  • Web or app interface, browser/app version, and operating system
  • Personal or workspace account, plan, and whether the project is shared
  • Minimal reproduction steps, expected and actual results, and exact error text

A small, non-sensitive sample can help establish whether the same steps fail. For assistance, follow the official support instructions and use the Help Center’s bottom-right chat entry point. Redact private details from screenshots; never provide passwords or one-time codes.

Availability and what to do next

As checked on October 11, 2026, the Library documentation lists Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces, including the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK. It specifies web availability. Projects remain subject to plan and workspace settings, with plan-dependent file limits. One account or device’s interface is not evidence of identical availability for everyone. Library availability, Projects limits

If you have not decided what to keep, start with the roles of projects, folders, and chats. To keep old and current drafts distinct afterward, continue with context and version management. The finish line here is narrower: the correct material can be found, opened, and checked in the correct project’s Sources.
